At SmartStep Foot and Ankle, we believe that getting expert podiatry care should be as easy as possible. As a 100% virtual practice serving all of North and South Carolina, we've streamlined the process to make your telehealth visit convenient and fast. Our goal is to offer access to people from Charlotte to Myrtle Beach without the need to drive to an office for expert foot care.

What Do I Need to Get Started?

Although we provide detailed instructions when you sign up for your visit, you may be wondering, "What do I need to get started?" The great news is, the technology you need is likely already in your home!

A successful telehealth podiatry visit is all about having a clear connection so we can see your feet and discuss your concerns in real-time. If you’re wondering what kind of technology you need to get started, here's a simple checklist of the technology and environment we recommend:

1. A Device with a Camera and Microphone

If you have a device with a camera and microphone, chances are good that you already have all that you need., It’s optimal to have a screen large enough for you to see us and for us to see you, and we recommend using speakerphone during your visit. Alternatively, you can use headphones (wired or wireless) connected to your device during your visit.

Below are some popular choices for devices to use during your virtual podiatry visit:

  • Smartphone: This is often the most convenient choice. You can easily position it to show us a close-up of your foot, and the built-in camera and microphone work perfectly to allow for real-time communication.
  • Tablet: Similar to a smartphone but with a larger screen, a tablet can offer a more comfortable viewing experience.
  • Laptop or Desktop Computer: If you prefer a larger screen and a stable surface, a computer with a webcam and microphone is an excellent option. We recommend using a webcam that can be moved around independent of your desktop computer to ensure we’re able to see everything needed during your visit.

You Don't Need to Be a Tech Genius!

One of the best things about SmartStep Foot and Ankle is that our system is designed with you in mind. You don't need the latest smartphone or to be a "tech genius" to get personalized, one-on-one service.

Our intuitive system is designed to allow access for just about anyone as long as you have a device with a camera and a microphone. We'll send you a simple, secure link before your appointment. All you need to do is click it, and you'll be connected to your podiatrist. It’s that easy! We've removed the technological barriers so you can focus on what's most important: your foot health.

2. A Reliable Internet Connection

Your visit will be conducted via a secure video conferencing platform, so a stable internet connection is essential to avoid interruptions or a blurry video. Most modern home internet connections in North and South Carolina are more than sufficient for a smooth telehealth visit.

If you're concerned about your connection, you can:

  • Use Wi-Fi: Ensure you are in a location with a strong Wi-Fi signal.
  • Use Cellular Data: If your Wi-Fi is unreliable, your smartphone's cellular data can be a great backup. Just be mindful of your data plan.
  • Check Your Speed: If you want to be extra prepared, you can use a free online tool to test your internet speed. We generally recommend at least 5-10 Mbps (megabits per second) for a good quality video call.

3. A Private, Well-Lit Space

While not "technology" in the traditional sense, your physical environment is crucial for a successful visit.

For the best experience, we recommend:

  • Privacy: Choose a quiet, private space where you can speak openly with your podiatrist without interruption. This ensures your medical information remains confidential, and our HIPAA-compliant connection protects your privacy as well.
  • Good Lighting: Make sure your foot is well-lit so we can get a clear view of the area of concern. Natural light from a window is often best, but a bright lamp works just as well. Avoid sitting with a window or light source behind you, as this can create a silhouette.

4. A Little Preparation

A few simple steps before your visit can make a big difference:

  • Test your device ahead of time to make sure your camera and microphone are working.
  • Position your camera so you can easily show us your foot, ankle, or leg. A stack of books or a propped-up laptop can be very helpful.
  • Have any relevant information ready, such as a list of medications, your medical history, or a photo you may have taken of your foot.

Ready for Your Virtual Visit?

You don't need a medical degree to get great podiatric care. You just need the right virtual podiatry practice and a few basic pieces of technology.

If you're a resident of North or South Carolina, SmartStep Foot and Ankle is here to provide convenient, expert care for all your foot and ankle needs. Schedule your telehealth appointment with us today and take the first step toward healthier feet!
