Headed by Medical Director Dr. Thurmond Lanier, SmartStep Foot and Ankle is the premier provider of foot and ankle care in Fort Mill, SC, and the surrounding Charlotte Metro area.

Our practice started with a simple mission: to make high-quality podiatry care truly accessible. We uphold that commitment today through same-day and next-day appointments, seamless online booking, and a personalized experience for every patient.

A Legacy of Innovation

While our practice initially launched using telehealth to serve patients across the Carolinas, our core model has evolved into a dedicated physical office in Fort Mill, SC.

Today, SmartStep Foot and Ankle delivers advanced, hands-on podiatric care using state-of-the-art technology, including digital scanning for custom orthotics and advanced regenerative medicine, while continuing to offer telehealth checkups for ongoing patient convenience.

Dr. Thurmond Lanier, DPM, MPH, FACFAS

Board-Certified Podiatrist & Foot Surgeon

Thurmond Lanier, DPM, MPH, FACFAS, is the founder and medical director of SmartStep Foot and Ankle. As a board-certified foot and ankle surgeon, Dr. Lanier specializes in reconstructive and minimally invasive surgery, bringing years of expertise to help patients regain mobility and live pain-free.

Dr. Lanier earned his Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of South Carolina and his podiatric medical degree from the New York College of Podiatric Medicine, graduating summa cum laude as class salutatorian. He also holds a Master’s in Teaching from the University of South Carolina and a Master of Public Health from the City University of New York.

Dr. Lanier resides in Charlotte, NC, with his wife and four children. He is an avid fan of the Carolina Panthers and South Carolina Gamecocks, and enjoys traveling and attending sporting events with his family.
